First established in 1892, rebuilt in 1897 & 1936 after fires burnt the first two versions to the ground, the 1936 rebuild is the Great Northern you see today. The “front bar” is a perfect example of a proper, old Australian Hotel Bar, rich with character and great place to have a beer and watch some live sport. Not to mention the top-quality live music by the very best blues, rock & folk artists the Northern Rivers region has to offer.

Several renovations through the years has given us the current layout, including the back room which was added in 1994. This, purpose built, live music venue is known all around the world and has hosted hundreds of iconic live concerts by countless bands that include Paul Kelly, Fat Freddies Drop & Ocean Alley just to name a few. You can catch a show here almost every weekend of the year.

In 2021, the addition of the Byron Bay Duelling Pianos to our cocktail bar has been popular beyond belief amongst locals and tourists alike. Already boasting some of the best piano players from around Australia on a weekly basis, we are now looking forward to welcoming some of the very best in the world with the best players from Las Vegas’ joining the team very soon!

The Great Northern is home to a hugely popular drive through Bottleshop which boasts one of the best wine selections you will find anywhere as well as an incredible selection of local, international and craft beers to choose from.
